Where it came from
Illuminor Szeras, appearing as a legendary creature card in the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set released in 2022, represents the Necron faction from the expansive Games Workshop tabletop universe. The card was designed as part of a collaborative deck release between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, aiming to translate the high-fantasy sci-fi aesthetic of the 41st millennium into the mechanical framework of Magic: The Gathering. Its illustration, created by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, emphasizes the character’s unsettling obsession with biological experimentation and his role as a master cryptek.
The card’s design captures Szeras’s narrative arc, where his abilities reflect the Necron focus on resource manipulation and the harvesting of living essence. Within the community, the card was received as a technically proficient representation of the character's lore, balancing thematic flavor with competitive utility. It remains a fixture in the Necron Dynasties preconstructed deck, serving as both a thematic centerpiece for players of the faction and a functional tool for decks centered around artifact synergies.
