Immard, the Stormcleaver

Immard, the Stormcleaver, identified as card number 14 in the Universes Within set, represents a conceptual shift in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. The Universes Within initiative was launched by Wizards of the Coast to provide non-branded, lore-integrated versions of cards that were originally released as part of the Secret Lair x crossover collaborations. By re-skinning characters from external intellectual properties into the native fantasy setting of the Multiverse, the designers aimed to preserve mechanical parity while maintaining the aesthetic continuity of the game.

The art and design for this card prioritize a high-fantasy aesthetic consistent with the established visual language of the plane where it resides. The illustration emphasizes the rugged, elemental themes associated with the character's mechanical identity, focusing on dynamic movement and the wielding of storm-infused weaponry. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional necessity for players who preferred thematic immersion over the crossover branding, effectively bridging the gap between niche marketing tactics and core gameplay consistency.
