Where it came from
Imotekh the Stormlord was released in 2022 as part of the Necrons-themed 'Necron Dynasties' deck for the Magic: The Gathering Warhammer 40,000 Commander set. This collaborative release marked a significant intersection between Wizards of the Coast’s trading card game and Games Workshop’s tabletop wargaming universe, designed to integrate the lore and aesthetics of the Necron race into the mechanics of Commander play.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who rendered the Phaeron of the Sautekh Dynasty with a focus on his cold, calculating authority and iconic staff. The design emphasizes his role as a tactical master within the Necron hierarchy, translating his tabletop wargaming ability to manipulate the battlefield into a synergy-focused card effect that rewards the player for artifacts leaving the graveyard.
