Where it came from
Impede Momentum was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to celebrate the franchise's 30th anniversary by returning to its foundational plane, Dominaria. Mechanically, the card serves as a blue common intended for the Limited play environment, utilizing the 'stun' keyword introduced in this set to offer players a way to tempo their opponents by locking down key creatures.
The artwork was illustrated by David Auden Nash, who focused on the visual representation of magical stasis. The design aligns with the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Dominaria setting, emphasizing the sudden, frozen impact of the spell. Upon release, the card was received as a functional tool for draft and sealed play, noted for its efficiency in stalling aggressive board states during the mid-game.
