Where it came from
Imperial Aerosaur was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on a plane inspired by the Age of Discovery and Mesoamerican civilizations, the card features an armored dinosaur mounted by a soldier of the Sun Empire. It was designed to function as an efficient mid-game white creature, providing a flying presence that buffs another creature, reflecting the set's themes of aerial combat and tribal synergy.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who is well known for his work on numerous Magic sets. Kieryluk’s design leans into the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Sun Empire, emphasizing the scale and regal nature of the aerosaur. Upon its release, it became a staple in Limited formats, where its combination of evasion and a power-boosting ability proved effective in aggressive white-based decks.
