Where it came from
Imperial Lancer was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Ixalan, which draws heavy inspiration from Age of Discovery exploration narratives and Mesoamerican history, the card represents the militaristic presence of the Sun Empire. The design emphasizes the set's tribal synergy mechanics, specifically rewarding players for controlling Dinosaur creatures, which serves as a cornerstone of the White-aligned faction within the set's narrative.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Greg Staples, a veteran artist for Wizards of the Coast known for his evocative and painterly style. Staples focused on capturing the disciplined, regimented aesthetic of the Sun Empire’s cavalry, utilizing a color palette that aligns with the bright, tropical, and sunlight-drenched environment of the Ixalan plane. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional 'uncommon' utility piece, primarily valued by players building Limited formats or tribal-focused Commander decks centered around the Dinosaur creature type.
