Provenance

Where it came from

Imprison was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was notable for being the first to introduce gold-bordered multi-colored cards, designed to encourage players to build decks using more than one color of mana. The expansion aimed to deepen the strategic complexity of the game, which was still in its infancy following the initial success of the Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited editions.

The card was illustrated by artist Dameon Willich, who contributed several pieces to the early Magic: The Gathering sets. Willich's style for Imprison reflected the darker, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the mid-1990s era of the game. While the card is often remembered for its niche functional design rather than widespread competitive viability, it remains a distinct artifact of the Legends era, documenting the experimental period of early card mechanics and illustrative tone.
