Imprisoned in the Moon

Imprisoned in the Moon was first released in 2016 as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a blue enchantment that transforms a powerful permanent—such as a creature, planeswalker, or land—into a colorless land, representing the narrative event where the Eldrazi titan Emrakul is sealed within the moon of the plane Innistrad. It serves as a flavor-rich form of removal, effectively neutralizing a threat while remaining within the mechanical color pie of blue.

The artwork was created by Cliff Childs, who aimed to capture the eerie, celestial horror aesthetic central to the Eldritch Moon storyline. By depicting the massive, tentacled presence of the Eldrazi invading the lunar surface, the illustration reinforces the card's function of trapping a subject in a desolate, otherworldly state. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its versatility and its ability to answer problematic cards that are otherwise difficult for blue decks to remove permanently.
