Where it came from
Improbable Alliance was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavily from Arthurian legend and Grimm's fairy tales, aiming to blend high fantasy with whimsical, folklore-inspired mechanics. The card was designed to support the 'draw two cards' archetype prevalent in the set, mechanically rewarding players for looting or cycling through their deck to generate tokens.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who was tasked with capturing the essence of the set's fairy-tale aesthetic. Her illustration depicts a knight-like figure interacting with a fantastical creature, emphasizing the cooperative themes inherent in the card's name. Upon release, it became a staple of Limited environments and saw fringe play in various Constructed formats, valued primarily for its ability to create a consistent stream of flying blockers while filtering a player's hand.
