Imps' Taunt

Imps' Taunt was originally printed in the 1997 Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set designed to advance the game's mechanics by introducing features like buyback and shadow. As part of a cycle of cards focused on color-shifted or disruptive effects, this black sorcery was intended to capitalize on the expansion's themes of volatility and high-risk strategy, reflecting the ruthless nature of the set's storyline on the plane of Rath.

The card features an illustration by the artist Val Mayerik, whose distinct, gritty style helped establish the dark aesthetic of the Tempest block. While it was not a centerpiece of competitive play during its initial release, it has since been included in 'The List,' a curated selection of cards that Wizards of the Coast includes in random booster packs to introduce players to various pieces of the game's long history and visual design evolution.
