Where it came from
The Impulse card from the 1997 World Championship Decks was released as part of a specialized boxed set replicating the decks used by the top players at the 1997 Magic: The Gathering World Championship in Seattle. These decks were produced to allow casual players to experience professional-level strategies, featuring gold-bordered cards with distinct backs that distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards. The set holds a unique place in the game's history as an early effort by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate competitive play and provide accessible versions of high-tier deck lists.
Originally illustrated by Anson Maddocks, the card depicts a classic high-fantasy aesthetic reflective of the art direction during the mid-1990s. The card's functionality—allowing a player to look at the top four cards of their library and keep one—made it a staple in blue control strategies of the era. Within the context of the 1997 World Championship, the card was a pivotal utility piece, valued by professional players for its ability to smooth out draws and locate specific answers during high-pressure matches.
