Provenance

Where it came from

Inevitable Betrayal was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed specifically for the Modern format, allowing Wizards of the Coast to introduce cards directly into the ecosystem without them passing through the standard rotation of legal sets. This card was crafted as a powerful sorcery spell, building upon the long-standing game mechanic of 'suspend' which forces players to balance long-term planning with immediate board state control.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a dark, atmospheric style to capture the themes of manipulation and impending doom. Within the game’s lore, the imagery reflects the high-stakes, multiversal conflicts characteristic of the set. Upon release, it was well-received by players interested in combo-oriented decks, as it allows for the theft of powerful creatures directly from an opponent’s library, reflecting a design philosophy that favors high-impact, splashy interactions.
