Murktide Regent

Murktide Regent was introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Modern Horizons 2, a product line specifically designed to inject powerful, nostalgic, and strategically complex cards directly into the Modern format. The creature was conceived as a high-impact threat that rewards players for utilizing their graveyard, a common archetype in the game's competitive landscape. Its mechanics represent the evolution of aggressive blue-aligned tempo strategies, balancing a steep casting cost with a powerful cost-reduction ability.

The card’s striking aesthetic was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who captured the creature as a menacing, oceanic force emerging from the depths. Rainville’s design utilizes a deep, ethereal color palette to emphasize the card’s connection to the Murktide—a fictional, magically infused body of water. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a defining presence in the competitive meta, quickly becoming a staple in high-level play due to its efficiency and resilience, cementing its reputation as a centerpiece of modern deck building.
