When this creature dies, incubate 3. (Create an Incubator token with three +1/+1 counters on it and "2 generic mana: Transform this token." It transforms into a 0/0 Phyrexian artifact creature.)
The diamond storms of Gobakhan hampered Phyrexia's progress until they recruited some of the local shieldmages.

Where it came from
Infected Defector was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set depicts the culmination of the Phyrexian invasion storyline, a multi-year narrative arc where the biomechanical Phyrexians attempted to conquer the multiverse by corrupting its inhabitants. This card represents a defector who has turned against the Phyrexian collective, reflecting the thematic emphasis on resistance and the desperate alliances formed across different planes of existence during the conflict.
The card features artwork by veteran illustrator Campbell White, who rendered the subject with the signature aesthetic of the Phyrexian aesthetic: a jarring blend of organic anatomy and cold, metallic augmentation. The design process focused on visualizing the lingering influence of the Phyrexian oil on the character while highlighting their act of defiance. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its specific utility within the limited format, serving as a functional piece of the set's broader mechanical puzzle involving transformation and loyalty mechanics.
