Where it came from
Initiate's Companion was released in 2020 as part of the Jumpstart set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to be a unique, pick-up-and-play experience, featuring randomized 20-card themed packs that could be shuffled together for immediate gameplay. The card serves as a common creature within the 'Cats' theme, reflecting the set's intent to simplify deck-building for both newcomers and veteran players.
The art for the card was created by artist Svetlin Velinov. Reflecting the aesthetics of the Amonkhet plane where the creature type originates, the illustration focuses on the lithe, feline form of the initiate. The design leans into the thematic identity of the set, emphasizing straightforward creature combat, and was received by the community as a functional, reliable utility piece within the specific context of the limited-format Jumpstart environment.
