Where it came from
Initiates of the Ebon Hand was released in 1994 as part of the Fallen Empires expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set focused on the collapse of the Sarpadian empires, depicting a world defined by conflict and tribal struggle. The card reflects the grim, dark fantasy aesthetic that defined the early era of the game, specifically representing the cults that arose amidst the societal breakdown of the period.
The card illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was a prolific contributor to the game's earliest sets. Maddocks utilized a distinct, moody style that emphasized the unsettling nature of the black-aligned cultists. Upon its release, the card became known for its ability to manipulate mana pools, a mechanic that saw moderate utility in constructed play at the time and cemented its place in the lore of the Ebon Hand organization.
