Where it came from
The Inkshield card was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line of Magic: The Gathering products introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. These drops are curated, limited-time sets featuring unique, thematic artistic treatments intended for collectors and players who appreciate unconventional card aesthetics that deviate from standard expansion sets.
The artwork for this specific iteration of Inkshield (collector number 1694) was commissioned to lean into the stylized, high-contrast visual identity characteristic of the Secret Lair series. The design process focused on reimagining the card's defensive mechanics through a distinct illustrative lens, aiming to provide a visually striking centerpiece for players seeking to customize their decks with cards that serve as both functional game pieces and curated art objects.
