Where it came from
Inkshield was released in 2021 as part of the Silverquill Statement Commander deck for the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. The card was designed to embody the essence of the Silverquill college, which blends white and black mana to focus on themes of words, ink, and social maneuvering. It functions as a reactive spell, rewarding players who can leverage the aggressive tactics of their opponents against them.
The artwork for Inkshield was commissioned from illustrator Wisnutanu Wijaya, who captured the magical essence of the card through swirling, solidified ink constructs. The piece was intended to evoke a sense of protection through artifice, aligning with the prestige and martial expertise associated with Strixhaven's literary-focused institution. Upon its release, it became a staple in the Commander format due to its unique ability to swing board states by generating a significant number of flying tokens based on incoming damage.
