Where it came from
The Inquisition of Kozilek card from the Strixhaven Art Series was released in 2021 as part of a specialized line of promotional cards designed to highlight the high-fidelity artwork of Magic: The Gathering. These cards feature an oversized format that excludes traditional game mechanics, serving purely as a display piece for the illustration. By isolating the art from the frame, Wizards of the Coast intended to elevate the visual storytelling elements that often become secondary during fast-paced competitive gameplay.
The artwork for this specific piece was rendered by the artist Svetlin Velinov. Tasked with depicting the reality-warping influence of the Eldrazi titan Kozilek, Velinov utilized a stark, monochromatic palette to emphasize the unsettling, geometric nature of the creature’s corruption. Upon release, the series was well-received by collectors for its ability to showcase the intricate detail and atmospheric depth of contemporary fantasy illustration in a format suitable for gallery-style display.
