Where it came from
Inspiring Refrain was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Doctor Who Commander set in October 2023. This expansion was designed to integrate the long-running television franchise into the tabletop game's mechanics, with the card featuring artwork by Johannes Voss. The design team focused on capturing the essence of the Doctor's ability to uplift companions and allies during moments of crisis, translating the show's narrative themes into gameplay effects that support collaborative play.
The card was received as a functional and thematic inclusion for decks built around Doctor Who characters. Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game, employed a vibrant, painterly style that emphasizes the character's hopeful nature. By utilizing the 'Doctor's companion' mechanic and specific color identities inherent to the set, the card served as a utility piece intended to bolster board states in multiplayer formats, effectively merging the lore of the Time Lord with the strategic requirements of the card game.
