Where it came from
Inspiring Refrain was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 product line, a set of preconstructed decks designed specifically for the multiplayer Magic: The Gathering format known as Commander. The card was featured in the Prismari Performance deck, which explored the synergy between spell-casting and mana efficiency within the Izzet (blue and red) color identity. Its design was intended to provide a high-impact, delayed-gratification resource engine that rewards strategic planning in longer, social games.
The artwork was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, who employed a dynamic, vibrant style to capture the magical, musical energy central to the Prismari aesthetic. The visual concept focuses on the concept of 'suspend,' a mechanical theme that forces the player to wait for the card to resolve, visually represented by the shimmering, ethereal nature of the refrain itself. The card was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to generate recurring card advantage and its thematic alignment with the 'showstopping' performance motifs of the set.
