Inspiring Roar

Inspiring Roar was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a white common-rarity sorcery card, intended to provide a functional combat trick for the 'revolt' mechanic, which rewarded players for having permanents leave the battlefield during a turn. The set's narrative centers on the rebellion of the citizens of Kaladesh against the tyrannical Consulate, and the card's mechanical design reflects the collaborative spirit and tactical reinforcement of that uprising.

The illustration for Inspiring Roar was created by the artist Bastien L. Deharme. He sought to capture the ethereal and golden aesthetic of Kaladesh’s technology, focusing on the visual representation of sudden, mobilized encouragement among a group of soldiers. Upon release, the card was utilized primarily in the Limited formats of Draft and Sealed, where its ability to grant +1/+1 counters and vigilance provided a reliable, low-cost way to swing the momentum of a combat phase in the player's favor.
