Where it came from
Inspiring Statuary was originally introduced in the Aether Revolt set for Magic: The Gathering in 2017. Designed to support artifact-heavy strategies, its ability to grant the Improvise mechanic to non-artifact spells allows players to tap their artifacts to help pay for mana costs, reflecting the industrial and innovative theme of the Kaladesh block.
The inclusion of Inspiring Statuary as a Retro Artifact in The Brothers' War in 2022 served as a thematic nod to the franchise's deep history. By featuring the classic, pre-2003 card frame, the design team emphasized the card's utility in manipulating the board state while honoring the aesthetic of Magic's early years, providing players with both a mechanical powerhouse and a piece of nostalgic design.
