Insufferable Syphon

The Insufferable Syphon was released in 2017 as part of Unstable, the third silver-bordered 'un-set' produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by head designer Mark Rosewater and his team, the set was conceived as a creative sandbox that experimented with mechanics and humor that would be impossible within the traditional, rules-rigid tournament environment. The Syphon specifically plays into the set’s theme of mechanical oddities, utilizing a 'host' and 'augment' mechanic that allows players to physically combine two half-cards to create a new creature.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often leans into surreal and high-fantasy aesthetics. In this context, he leaned into the whimsical yet slightly unsettling laboratory theme pervasive throughout the Unstable set. Upon its release, the card was received as a quintessential example of the set’s design philosophy: prioritizing player interaction and unconventional gameplay over the strategic balance required for competitive play, cementing its place as a memorable curiosity for collectors of non-standard card sets.
