Where it came from
Into the Time Vortex was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond Doctor Who Commander set in October 2023. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, this card serves as a blue sorcery that integrates the show's core temporal mechanics into the game's engine, allowing players to cascade through their deck to represent the unpredictable nature of travel through time and space.
The card features artwork commissioned to capture the iconic aesthetic of the Doctor's journeys. Illustrators focused on the swirling, ethereal transition of the Time Vortex as seen in the long-running BBC television series, balancing the technical requirements of a high-mana cost spell with the nostalgic visual language that appeals to both long-time Whovians and tabletop gaming enthusiasts.
