Where it came from
Invasion of Theros, featuring the god Ephara, Ever-Sheltering, was released as part of the March of the Machine expansion in 2023. The card belongs to the Battle card type, a revolutionary addition to Magic: The Gathering that represents the multi-planar conflict against the Phyrexians. This specific design depicts the besieged plane of Theros, where the inhabitants engage in a desperate struggle to defend their home, reflecting the overarching narrative of the set.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work is highly regarded in the community for its ethereal and painterly aesthetic. Voss sought to capture the protective and divine essence of Ephara amidst the chaotic backdrop of the Phyrexian invasion, balancing the lore-heavy demands of the card's mechanics with the evocative visual language established for the Theros setting. The release was well-received by players for both its thematic integration and its distinct foil treatment, which highlights the celestial motifs central to the god's design.
