Where it came from
The Invasion of Kaldheim // Pyre of the World Tree card was released as part of the March of the Machine set in 2023. It represents a pivotal narrative moment in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, depicting the Phyrexians' multiversal assault on the plane of Kaldheim, a setting heavily inspired by Norse mythology. The double-faced card design serves as a storytelling mechanic, capturing the transition from the chaotic conflict of the invasion to the transformative potential of the World Tree's pyre.
The illustration for the card was created by artist Titus Lunter, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the Kaldheim setting. Lunter’s design leans into the atmospheric, high-fantasy aesthetic established for the plane, utilizing bold lighting and dramatic perspectives to emphasize the scale of the conflict. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for Commander players, valued for its utility in graveyard-based strategies and its thematic resonance with the overarching story of the Phyrexian war.
