Where it came from
Inventive Wingsmith was introduced in the 2024 set Outlaws of Thunder Junction, a high-concept expansion for Magic: The Gathering that transposed traditional fantasy elements into a frontier-themed Western setting. The card depicts a specialist who enhances mechanical wings, embodying the set's focus on desperate innovation and outlaw ingenuity. It serves as a mechanical support card designed to reward players for casting multiple spells, fitting the set's synergy-heavy environment.
The artwork was commissioned from artist Justine Mara Andersen, who was tasked with blending the steampunk-adjacent technology of the plane with the rugged aesthetic of the Thunder Junction region. By focusing on the figure's intense craftsmanship amidst a dusty, expansive landscape, the illustration captures the resourceful spirit central to the set's narrative. Upon release, the card was recognized by players as a staple for limited formats due to its reliable evasion and incremental power scaling.
