Where it came from
Invoke the Ancients was released in 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a high-mana value sorcery intended to capture the spirit of Kamigawa’s legendary past, where mortal heroes and ancient spirits intertwined. It sits within the set’s broader aesthetic, which blends traditional Japanese-inspired folklore with a vibrant, high-tech cyberpunk future, emphasizing the game's core theme of the conflict and harmony between nature and machinery.
The artwork for this specific card was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast from artist Johannes Voss. Known for his evocative and painterly style, Voss aimed to depict the summoning of primal forces through a mix of ethereal, glowing spirit energy and modern composition. Upon release, the card became a notable inclusion for players focusing on green-based mid-range strategies, praised for its ability to provide board presence by creating multiple token creatures that mimic legendary spirit archetypes from the lore.
