Provenance

Where it came from

Izzet Boilerworks was originally released in the 2005 expansion Ravnica: City of Guilds as part of the bounceland cycle. These lands were designed to represent the infrastructure of the Izzet League, a guild of chaotic inventors and mages in the cityscape of Ravnica. The card mechanics, which require a player to return a land to their hand, were intended to simulate the precarious and high-energy nature of Izzet engineering experiments.

This specific printing appears in the 2012 Duel Decks: Izzet vs. Golgari set. The illustration, created by fan-favorite artist Dan Dos Santos, emphasizes the industrial and steampunk aesthetic synonymous with the Izzet faction. Upon its release, the card became a staple in Commander and various casual formats due to its ability to act as a utility land that provides both blue and red mana, while simultaneously enabling synergies with land-fall effects or hand-size mechanics.
