Jace's Phantasm

Jace's Phantasm was originally released in the Magic 2013 core set and later featured in the 2017 Iconic Masters expansion as part of a curated selection designed to celebrate the history of the game. The card represents a recurring motif in Magic: The Gathering, where legendary planeswalker Jace Beleren’s psychic abilities are manifested as illusory creatures. Its design emphasizes a low mana cost for a potentially high power-and-toughness creature, contingent on the opponent having a specified number of cards in their graveyard, which aligns with the blue mana color identity of mill and control strategies.

The artwork for the Iconic Masters printing maintains the established visual language of the character’s phantasms, utilizing cool tones and ethereal, vaporous textures to denote their illusory nature. As a reprint in a set focused on powerful and iconic cards, the illustration serves to reinforce the thematic link between the card’s mechanics and the lore surrounding Jace Beleren. The reception of the card among players has been largely centered on its utility in niche formats like Modern and Pauper, where its ability to grow into a five-power flying creature for one mana can exert significant early-game pressure.
