Where it came from
Wing Shards was originally introduced in the Scourge expansion in 2003, designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team as a tactical defensive tool for white decks. The card utilizes the storm mechanic, which rewards players for casting multiple spells in a single turn by duplicating the effect for each previous spell played, thereby punishing opponents who attempt to overwhelm the board with creatures.
The version from the Iconic Masters set, released in 2017, features updated art that maintains the card's identity as a manifestation of crystalline weaponry. Iconic Masters was curated to highlight powerful cards from throughout the game's history, and the inclusion of Wing Shards served to provide a functional reprint for players utilizing the card's unique removal capabilities in various Limited and Commander formats.
