Where it came from
Jace's Ruse was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set War of the Spark. The set was designed to be a major narrative climax, featuring a massive conflict on the plane of Ravnica involving numerous planeswalker characters. The card depicts the telepath Jace Beleren, reflecting his strategic role during the war as he navigates the complex magical warfare orchestrated by the antagonist Nicol Bolas.
The artwork was illustrated by Anna Steinbauer, who has been a consistent contributor to the game's aesthetic identity. Her design for this piece focuses on a sense of intellectual clarity and calculated manipulation, fitting the blue mana color philosophy of the card. Upon its release, the card was integrated into limited play environments, where its function as both a card-draw engine and an enchantment presence made it a functional tool for players focusing on spell-heavy strategies.
