Where it came from
New Horizons was released in May 2019 as part of the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked the climax of the multi-year Nicol Bolas story arc, featuring a record-breaking number of Planeswalker cards that impacted the game's mechanical landscape. The card was designed to support the set's focus on proliferate mechanics, allowing players to manipulate counters on their permanents as the battle on the plane of Ravnica reached its peak.
The card's illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the game's aesthetic identity. His depiction of the card focuses on the vibrant, transformative energy of the Ravnican landscape, aiming to visually represent the concept of growth and magical empowerment. Upon release, the card was widely utilized in limited formats and served as a functional utility piece for decks relying on +1/+1 counters or loyalty management.
