Provenance

Where it came from

The Jalum Tome was released in 1997 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Anthologies' set, a curated collection designed to celebrate the game's early history by reprinting iconic cards from the first few years of production. The card itself, a powerful artifact allowing players to draw and discard cards, first appeared in the Antiquities expansion, which centered on the fictional narrative of the Brothers' War. It served as a utility piece for decks requiring deck thinning and card selection.

The artwork was created by fantasy illustrator Anson Maddocks, whose distinctively eerie and textured style defined much of the aesthetic of Magic's early sets. The design aimed to capture the essence of a mysterious, ancient repository of forbidden knowledge. Upon its debut, the card was well-regarded by players for its efficiency in complex deck strategies, becoming a staple in the high-level competitive environment of the mid-1990s.
