Jayemdae Tome

The Jayemdae Tome first appeared in the original Magic: The Gathering Alpha set in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as part of the game's foundational artifact pool. It was conceived as a high-cost utility card that offered players a repetitive card-advantage engine, reflecting the early design philosophy of rewarding players for managing their resources over a long-term game state. Its name and flavor text, which references the fictional archives of the Library of Leng, established a sense of deep, mystical lore that became a hallmark of the game's identity.

The version from the Rivals Quick Start Set, numbered 50, was released as part of an introductory product designed to welcome new players to the game. It utilized the classic illustration by Quinton Hoover, whose distinct, painterly style defined much of the aesthetic for early artifacts. Hoover’s artwork for the Tome, depicting a glowing, heavy book bound in leather and metal, is considered an iconic piece of fantasy illustration that helped solidify the visual language of the game for an entire generation of collectors.
