Where it came from
Jem Lightfoote, Sky Explorer was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The set draws heavily from Western genre tropes, reimagined through the lens of high-fantasy multiverse tropes. As a card depicting a sky-faring adventurer, Jem represents the set's emphasis on exploration and the harsh, frontier-like landscape of the titular plane, which serves as a nexus for various outlaws and treasure hunters across the game's narrative.
The character design reflects the blend of steampunk aesthetic and classic Western archetypes common throughout the set. The art, created by illustrator Joshua Raphael, focuses on a sense of kinetic movement and light, capturing the character in the midst of an aerial maneuver. Within the game's competitive landscape, the card is recognized for its utility in specific deck builds, particularly those that capitalize on the mount and crew mechanics introduced during this era of design.
