Jeskai Elder was first released in the 2014 expansion Khans of Tarkir, representing the Jeskai Way, one of the five clans of the Tarkir plane. The card was subsequently reprinted in the Duel Decks: Speed vs. Cunning set as card number 46, a product designed to showcase the contrast between the aggressive tactics of the Mardu clan and the tactical ingenuity of the Jeskai. This reprint served to reinforce the thematic identity of the deck, which centered on the monk-like discipline and spell-weaving combat style associated with the clan.

The art for Jeskai Elder was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose work is characterized by a fluid, painterly style that captures the mystical and agile nature of the monk.
