Juri, Master of the Revue

Juri, Master of the Revue was introduced in the 2020 Commander Legends set, a pioneering expansion for Magic: The Gathering designed specifically to facilitate a draft-style experience within the Commander format. The card reflects the chaotic, theatrical essence of the Rakdos guild, a faction known for their blend of sadistic violence and grotesque performance art. Mechanically, the card was designed to incentivize sacrifice-based strategies, where the player intentionally destroys their own permanents to fuel Juri’s growth and explosive, damage-dealing payoff.

The illustration for Juri was created by artist Yongjae Choi, who emphasizes the character's manic energy and signature cyclopean aesthetic. The visual design leans heavily into the dark carnival motif associated with the Ravnica setting’s most volatile guild, balancing lethal capability with a flamboyant, villainous posture. Upon release, the card was well-received by players focusing on red-black color identities, particularly those seeking a Commander that offers a rhythmic, high-risk, high-reward playstyle centered on resource management and late-game impact.
