Where it came from
Tormod, the Desecrator was introduced in the 2020 Commander Legends set, a collection specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format. The card serves as a thematic representation of Tormod, a legendary figure within the lore of Magic: The Gathering associated with the Cryptbreaker and the manipulation of the dead. Its design focuses on rewarding players for exiling cards from graveyards, a mechanic that synergizes with various black-aligned strategies that capitalize on graveyard attrition.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a dark and ethereal visual style to capture the character's necrotic nature. As part of a set intended to bolster commander-led deck building, Tormod was received by the player base as a utility piece for graveyard-focused decks, frequently appearing as a commander or within the ninety-nine of decks utilizing black mana to drain opponent resources through repeated graveyard interaction.
