Where it came from
Kaheera, the Orphanguard was originally released in the 2020 expansion Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths as a legendary elemental cat. The design focuses on the 'companion' mechanic, a controversial but impactful addition to Magic: The Gathering that allowed players to include a specific card outside their main deck if they adhered to strict deck-building restrictions. Kaheera specifically incentivized players to build tribal decks around cats, elementals, nightmares, dinosaurs, or beasts, rewarding them with a powerful anthem effect.
The Multiverse Legends version, numbered 177z, appeared as a special inclusion in the 2023 expansion March of the Machine. This reprint featured the distinctive 'halo' foil treatment and a showcase frame style inspired by the plane of Ikoria. The illustration captures the majestic, crystalline aesthetic associated with the world's apex monsters, emphasizing the creature's role as a protective guardian. The release was well-received by collectors who favored the stylized, high-contrast frame designs over the original printing.
