Where it came from
Kaheera, the Orphanguard was introduced in the 2020 expansion Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, a set focused on themes of monster-bonding and mutation. The card was specifically designed as a companion, a mechanic that allows players to access a specific creature from outside their deck if their deck-building restrictions are met. This design choice sought to introduce a new layer of strategic consistency to formats like Commander and Standard, though it sparked significant discussion among the Magic: The Gathering community regarding balance.
The card was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who captured the creature's noble, feline-like appearance to embody its role as a protector of beasts. As part of the promotional set for Ikoria, this specific version features the unique card treatment associated with the set's release. It was received as a versatile tool in tribal strategies, particularly those centered around cats and elementals, and remains a notable example of the companion cycle's influence on deck construction history.
