Where it came from
Kambal, Profiteering Mayor was released as part of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction set in 2024, specifically appearing as a promotional card. The character of Kambal, originally introduced in the Kaladesh block, was reimagined for this set's Western-inspired, frontier-fantasy aesthetic to fit the theme of high-stakes outlaws and scheming figures. The design aims to capture his transition from a bureaucratic authority figure to a opportunistic profiteer operating within the lawless environment of the Omenpaths.
The artwork for this particular iteration reflects the high-stylized aesthetic of the Thunder Junction promotion cycle, utilizing bold framing and distinct environmental cues to emphasize the character’s newfound influence. As a legendary creature, the card was designed to incentivize group-hug style play patterns, punishing opponents for drawing extra cards or creating tokens. It has been received by the Magic: The Gathering community as a potent commander option for Orzhov-colored decks that focus on resource taxation and political friction.
