Kardur, Doomscourge // Kardur, Doomscourge

Kardur, Doomscourge was released in 2021 as part of the Kaldheim Art Series, a sub-collection of Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering. These cards were specifically produced as promotional items, featuring full-art illustrations without the standard card frame or rules text found on game-playable cards. This particular piece highlights the work of artist Yongjae Choi, who rendered the titular demon of the Kaldheim plane with a focus on his role as an instigator of chaos and conflict.

The design of the Kardur illustration leans into the harsh, metallic, and icy aesthetic central to the Kaldheim expansion, which draws inspiration from Norse mythology. The art is intended to emphasize the character's imposing, horned silhouette and fiery temperament against the stark, cold backdrop of the setting. Upon release, the Art Series cards were well-received by collectors for their high-quality print finish and the opportunity they provided to view the set's illustrative talent without the obstruction of game mechanics.
