Where it came from
Karn, Silver Golem was first introduced in the 1998 Urza's Saga set as a legendary creature designed by Richard Garfield. As a sentient golem composed of silver, the character was created by the planeswalker Urza to serve as the key to his complex time-travel experiments. The card design serves as a foundational element of Magic: The Gathering lore, depicting a powerful utility creature that can animate artifacts, reflecting the character's role as a master of mechanical artifice within the game's narrative.
This specific printing originates from the 2009 From the Vault: Relics collection, a premium boxed set curated by Wizards of the Coast to showcase iconic artifacts throughout the game's history. The artwork for this iteration was updated by Aleksi Briclot, who sought to emphasize the character's imposing physical stature and metallic sheen. The release was well-received by collectors for its high-quality foil treatment and its selection of historically significant cards that bridged early game mechanics with modern aesthetic standards.
