Where it came from
Karn's Bastion was released as part of the War of the Spark expansion in 2019, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the set. This card represents a narrative turning point in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, where the planeswalker Karn establishes a stronghold to house the Sylex, a powerful artifact intended to defeat the villain Nicol Bolas. The design team sought to reflect the mechanical theme of 'proliferate'—a process of spreading energy or counters—within the context of the high-stakes conflict on Ravnica.
The artwork for this specific promotional version maintains the aesthetic continuity of the War of the Spark set, focusing on the imposing, metallic architecture of Karn’s design. Like other cards in the promotional cycle for this set, the Bastion served to highlight the importance of key figures in the Gatewatch's struggle. It was received as a functional utility land, prized by players for its ability to bolster board states in casual and Commander formats, reinforcing the set's focus on the power and impact of planeswalkers.
