Where it came from
Karn's Bastion was introduced as part of the War of the Spark set in 2019, specifically appearing as a promotional card. The card serves as a narrative anchor for the set's plot, depicting the titular character Karn constructing a fortified sanctuary during the cataclysmic planar invasion of Ravnica by Nicol Bolas. The design emphasizes the character's role as a protector and his connection to the Phyrexians, reflecting the high-stakes conflict that defined the War of the Spark era of Magic: The Gathering storytelling.
The artwork for this specific promotional variant was rendered by artist Titus Lunter. Lunter’s design approach was focused on capturing the monolithic, metallic scale of Karn’s construction, utilizing a desaturated palette to convey the desperation and technological weight of the scene. The card was well-received by the player base for both its mechanical utility in proliferating counters and its role as a significant piece of visual lore that marked a turning point in the game's long-running multiverse narrative.
