Where it came from
Karn's Temporal Sundering was released as part of the Dominaria set in 2018, featuring a card frame that pays homage to the legacy of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The card depicts the iconic planeswalker Karn, a silver golem created by the legendary artificer Urza, during a pivotal moment of temporal manipulation. The card was designed to mechanically represent the themes of time and restoration that define Karn’s character arc within the narrative of the Dominaria plane.
The artwork for this specific promotional variant was created by Chase Stone, who focused on capturing the immense scale and stoic resolve of Karn amidst a shifting temporal landscape. The design utilizes a unique border treatment exclusive to the Dominaria promotional releases, which was intended to distinguish these cards from their standard set counterparts. Upon its release, the card was received favorably by collectors and players alike for its thematic resonance and its utility within commander formats.
