Where it came from
Karn's Temporal Sundering was released in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria, a return to the game's foundational plane. The card depicts a pivotal moment involving Karn, the silver golem and creator of the Mirari, as he utilizes his command over time to manipulate the battlefield. Mechanically, the card serves as both a board-clearing removal spell and an extra-turn enabler, cementing its role as a high-impact sorcery designed for late-game swing potential.
The artwork for this specific card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose painterly and ethereal style helped define the visual identity of the Dominaria set. Voss sought to capture the immense scale and temporal distortion inherent to Karn's abilities, utilizing a swirling, iridescent color palette to differentiate the reality-bending magic from the rest of the set's aesthetic. Upon its release, the card received significant attention from Commander players for its ability to generate massive tempo advantages, remaining a staple in blue-aligned control decks ever since.
