Provenance

Where it came from

The Kathari Remnant was originally introduced in the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2008, representing the Grixis shard—a plane defined by death, decay, and the absence of mana. It was later reprinted in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a collection designed to support the game’s chaotic, planar-traveling multiplayer format by compiling various decks from the series into a single boxed set.

The creature, a vulture-like humanoid, was illustrated by Zoltan Boros and Gabor Szikszai. Their design captures the grim, gothic aesthetic of the Grixis environment, emphasizing a sense of relentless, undead persistence. The card is mechanically significant for its cascade ability, which encourages a playstyle built around cascading into lower-cost spells, a trait that helped solidify its reputation as a utility card in budget-friendly graveyard and combo strategies.
